Title :	Quasi-periodic materials - a paradigm shift in crystallography
Speaker :	Prof. Dan Shechtman (Technion )
Abstract :	Crystallography has been one of the mature sciences. Over the years, the modern science of crystallography that started by experimenting with x-ray diffraction from crystals in 1912, has developed a major paradigm – that all crystals are ordered and periodic. Indeed, this was the basis for the definition of “crystal” in textbooks of crystallography and x-ray diffraction. Based upon a vast number of experimental data, constantly improving research tools, and deepening theoretical understanding of the structure of crystalline materials no revolution was anticipated in our understanding the atomic order of solids. However, such revolution did happen with the discovery of the Icosahedral phase, the first quasi-periodic crystal (QC) in 1982, and its announcement in 1984 [1, 2]. QCs are ordered materials, but their atomic order is quasiperiodic rather than periodic, enabling formation of crystal symmetries, such as icosahedral symmetry, which cannot exist in periodic materials. The discovery created deep cracks in this paradigm, but the acceptance by the crystallographers' community of the new class of ordered crystals did not happen in one day. In fact it took almost a decade for QC order to be accepted by most crystallographers. The official stamp of approval came in a form of a new definition of “Crystal” by the International Union of Crystallographers. The paradigm that all crystals are periodic has thus been changed. It is clear now that although most crystals are ordered and periodic, a good number of them are ordered and quasi-periodic. While believers and nonbelievers were debating, a large volume of experimental and theoretical studies was published, a result of a relentless effort of many groups around the world. Quasi-periodic materials have developed into an exciting interdisciplinary science. 2. Qualifications

 

 

a. Applicant should have a PhD degree and meet all requirements of the Seoul National University Hiring Policy (as a full-time faculty in the tenure track).

 

 

 b. Applicant should have more than one published in last 5 years.

 

 

 

 

3. Faculty Appointment (Contract) Period

 

 

The Appointment(Contract) period follows 「Seoul National University Hiring Policy」.

4. Review Processes

 

 

   a. All applicants will be selected and reviewed according to

 

 

: whether the applicant's abilities and specialization lie in the opening area, assessment of recent research achievements (within the past five years), total research achievements to the present, presentation or lecture, personal essay and statement of research and teaching objectives,  assessment of suitability of appointment

 

 

   b. All applications will be reviewed in two stages. The following criteria and materials will be reviewed at these stages:

 

 

Stage 1) Field of specialization review

 

 

a) Whether the applicant's abilities and specialization lie in the opening area

 

 

b) Assessment of recent research achievements (within the past five years)

 

 

c) Total research achievements to the present

 

 

Stage 2) Interview

 

 

a) Presentation or lecture

 

 

b) Personal essay and statement of research and teaching objectives

 

 

c) Assessment of suitability of appointment

 

 

 

 

5. Application Documents

b. Recent research achievements for detailed review: 1 copy each

 

 

     ① Research achievements for detailed review

 

 

       : Theses (1 above and 5 below, possible to include applicant’s graduate thesis) or books in the past 5 years (since the first of November, 2009)

 

 

② If summited research achievement has been accepted for publication but not been published until application due date, the applicant must summit “Thesis Certificate of Publication Acceptance” issued and signed by editor in chief. Both whether research achievement is recognized and date recognition are below:

 

 

         ⅰ. The expected publication date should be clearly stated on the thesis that is attached “Thesis Certificate of publication acceptance” for detailed review.

 

 

         ⅱ. Submitted research achievements must have been published until December 10, 2014. The published research achievements should be identical to the material submitted for application (adding/removal/changes are unacceptable).

 

 

         ⅲ. The thesis attached certificate of publication acceptance should be summited as soon as it is published but no later than December 10, 2014.

 

 

③ Books: A text book for the corresponding major or a research monograph that has contributed to progress in the corresponding research field and has been on an international level will be admitted. (Translations, redactions or only summiting book chapter are not counted).

 

 

c. Full list of research achievements: 1 copy (please write ISSN in Remarks column)

 

 

- All research achievements should be listed from the applicant's graduate school to the present with (where applicable) the title, authors, publication date and title of the journal (including volume, issue, pages) but not including items already listed on Research achievements for Detailed Review.

Statement of teaching should include a list of courses that the applicant would be able to teach together with suggestions of new courses that could be added to the curriculum. Research interests should include mid-term and long-term research plans and objectives.

     It should be from at least two scholars or professionals in the same field of specialization and be sent from the recommenders directly by post or e-mail

안녕하십니까?

한국과학창의재단의 지원으로 설립되어 서울대 자연대를 중심으로 운영되는 서울대학교 청소년과학기술진흥센터에서는 우리나라의 청소년들에게 과학기술의 중요성을 인식시키고 기초과학에 대한 흥미를 길러주는 사업을 다각적으로 수행하고 있습니다.

그 중 하나로 중학교 3학년과 고등학교 1학년 학생들을 대상으로 서울대학교 교수님들이 직접 강의하는 중고생을 위한 공개강좌가 있습니다.

2002년 2학기부터 시작한 중고생을 위한 공개강좌(토요과학교실)는 올해로 25기를 맞고 있으며 해를 더해 갈수록 참여 학생들의 관심과 호응이 높아가고 있습니다.

2014년 2학기 강좌는 서울 경기지역 학교에서 추천 받은 중3, 고 1학생들을 대상으로 10주에 걸쳐 자연대 교수님들이 과학기술의 여러 분야를 소개해 주실 것입니다.

한 학기당 100명의 인원 제한 때문에 모집인원보다 지원자가 많을 경우 추첨을 통해 참가자를 선정합니다. 지금까지 참가 학생들의 호응으로 보아 신청한 모든 학생을 수용하지 못할 수도 있음을 알려드립니다.

기간 및 접수방법은 다음을 참고하시고, 강사진과 자세한 일정은 추후에 센터 홈페이지를 통해 공고하겠습니다. 과학에 관심을 가진 학생들이 많이 참여해서 좋은 공개강좌가 되기를 바랍니다.
